"My grandmother's room smelled like permission."
From Permission
Not a book about how to write. A book about what happens in the moment just before you do.
Before the first word there is hovering — standing at the edge of the page the way you once stood at the edge of a pool, waiting for a reason to jump that never quite arrives. The First Page moves through the false starts, the sudden urgent need to do the dishes, the thought that arrives whole and clean and evaporates before it becomes action. Then it goes further. Into the burning in the chest. Into the box you've been writing around your whole life.
WATERLINE MOVEMENT I TOES IN THE SAND MOVEMENT II ANKLE DEEP MOVEMENT III FLOATING STANDING OUTSIDE IT, THEN UNDER
Movement I
Toes in the Sand
Standing at the threshold. Why you clean the kitchen instead of opening the notebook.
Movement II
Ankle Deep
The false start, the ache in the chest, the permission you have to give yourself.
Movement III
Floating
The surrender. What's actually in the box, and what it costs to open it.
Not three teachable steps — three depths, each one going further under than the last. The same central images keep returning: the box, the dragonfly, the threshold. Nothing resolves until the last page finally opens what's inside.
You sit down to write and somehow end up anywhere else.
You've felt a thought arrive whole and clean, and watched it vanish before you acted on it.
You know exactly what you're avoiding saying.
You've read craft books that start after the part you actually struggle with.
You want company at the threshold, not a technique for crossing it.
"Something in the chest that has been composing in the dark while you slept and has reached the point where it cannot wait until morning."
— Something in the Chest
"The stopping is not failure. It is information."
— Something Stops, Just Before…
"My grandmother's room smelled like permission. Not borrowed. Not institutional. Hers."
— Permission
Movement I — Toes in the Sand
The tide arriving in quiet rehearsals, before you've decided anything.
01
On Hovering
The pen that's been ready since morning, and everything else you do instead.
02
The Blank Page Is Never Blank
What's already written on the page before you sit down.
03
Something Stops, Just Before…
The gap between the clean, complete thought and the action that never follows.
04
The Unexamined Truth
The sentence you keep writing around.
Movement II — Ankle Deep
The water's colder here, and you go in anyway, half-convinced you'll turn back.
05
Something in the Chest
The physical ache of the thing not yet said.
06
The False Start
Reaching for it, and pulling back.
07
Permission
Realizing you were allowed all along.
08
Something in the Way
What's actually blocking you (and what isn't).
Movement III — Floating
You let go of the shore, sinking instead of struggling, and it's quieter than you thought it would be.
09
The Art of Not Leaving
Staying close enough to finally see it.
10
We Need to Talk
Looking directly at what you've been circling.
11
The First Page Is Surrender
The box opens, and what's inside isn't the monster you feared.
This book moves through real personal territory — grief, family silence, the parts of yourself you've been avoiding. It's a companion for that threshold, not a substitute for therapeutic support if you're working through deeper material.
The First Page is Book 2 of 2 in the series so far — a companion to Blue Pen, Black Pen, moving from the discovery that made writing possible to the threshold every session starts at. More mini books are planned, each one going deep on a single piece of the same terrain.

Deon C. Visser is a South African writer living in Rayong, Thailand, where he teaches English while developing his creative work. Writing in both English and Afrikaans, his work explores white African identity, queer experience, and the interior life of the writer — what happens before the first word, inside the silence, and after the page is turned. He is also, allegedly, still working on Die Klippenkraal Kronieke, an Afrikaans fantasy series in progress since 2018.
